Olimpiade

Olimpiade adalah ajang olahraga internasional empat tahunan yang mempertandingkan cabang-cabang olahraga musim panasdan musim dingin serta diikuti oleh ribuan atlet dari sekitar 200 negara yang berkompetisi dalam berbagai pertandingan olahraga. Awalnya, Olimpiade hanya berlangsung di Yunani kuno sampai pada tahun 393 M. Olimpiade kemudian dihidupkan kembali oleh Pierre Frèdy Baron de Coubertin pada tahun 1896. Dalam kongres pada tahun 1894 yang diselenggarakan di Paris, didirikanlah Komite Olimpiade Internasional (IOC) dan ibu kota Yunani, Athena dipilih sebagai tuan rumah Olimpiade modern pertama tahun 1896. Selanjutnya, sejak tahun 1896 sampai sekarang, setiap empat tahun sekali Olimpiade Musim Panas senantiasa diadakan kecuali tahun-tahun pada masa Perang Dunia II.

"Backpacks rip, pencils break, and children grow, there's no way around it, but as they begin tackling their shopping lists, parents will make sure to spend smarter than they ever have before," said National Retail Federation President Mathew Shay. "We fully expect retailers to be aggressive with their promotions both in-store and online, keeping an eye on inventory levels as families look to spread out their shopping throughout the entire summer."

9 Scientists Receive a New Physics Prize

Physicists are rarely wealthy or famous, but a new prize rewarding research at the field’s cutting edges has made nine of them instant multimillionaires.
The nine are recipients of the Fundamental Physics Prize, established by Yuri Milner, a Russian physics student who dropped out of graduate school in 1989 and later earned billions investing in Internet companies like Facebook and Groupon.
“It knocked me off my feet,” said Alan H. Guth, a professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who was among the winners. He came up with the idea of cosmic inflation, that there was a period of extremely rapid expansion in the first instant of the universe.
